Managing Partner
As a Managing Partner at HKMB, John’ responsibilities are very diverse, crossing industries as wide-ranging as auto dealers, financial institutions and sports and entertainment. With over 20-years experience in the insurance industry, John has a depth and breadth of knowledge that is invaluable when dealing with almost any industry or risk.
John currently oversees various HKMB practice areas including Sports and Entertainment, Auto Dealers and Leasing Companies. Within his portfolio are some of the largest lessors in North America, over 200 auto dealer locations, and Insurance Captives for two major auto manufacturers.
John graduated from McMaster University with a Bachelor of Arts Degree. While working for CIBC, he received excellent financial training and great business discipline which has stood him in good stead since. His career in insurance began as an underwriter, then Territory Director at Wellington Insurance (formerly Fireman’s Fund Insurance Company) in Toronto. In 1987, he left Wellington and, with business partner Greg Belton, purchased Muntz & Beatty Inc., one of Canada’s oldest commercial insurance brokerages. In 1994, Muntz & Beatty merged with Guthrie Keilty Bickerstaff and, in 1998, merged with Hunter Rowell Limited. Since 1998, HKMB has grown to become Canada’s largest privately owned commercial insurance brokerage.
John serves on the Boards of Directors of Eastern Platinum, Barplats and NexgenRx. He is also a long time Director of the Canadian Finance and Leasing Association (CFLA).
John also makes time to give back to his community. He has recently been named to the Board of Directors of Bishop Strachan School and is a member of the St. Joseph’s Hospital Capital Campaign Committee. Previously, he was a member of the Board of Governors of Kingsway College School, a Director of the Toronto Golf Club, and the coach of a successful minor hockey team.
John is a currently member of the University Club of Toronto, the Toronto Golf Club and of the Holimont Ski Club in Ellicottville, New York, is married and has 3 children.
